2016 Tire Rack College Station Championship Tour: 5toGo

Register for the College Station Championship Tour!

There is a land, a western land, mighty wonderful to see.

That land is Texas.

And deep in the heart of Texas, is College Station.

The town exists almost entirely because of Texas A&M, the largest university in Texas. The campus is extraordinary in size and has multiple sites around College Station. One of those is the Riverside Annex.

The Riverside Annex of Texas A&M University is home to an autocross site so special it must be locked up every night. It is not well known to the rest of the country, because here in Texas we like to keep it our little secret. And why wouldn't we want it all to ourselves. It is the former site of Bryan Air Force Base, which was a slightly more developed version of the Army Air Bases that dotted Texas during World War II. We have access to the former runways. And unlike most runway sites, that are just out and back, there is a crossover. This particular crossover is the confluence of 3 runways, meaning it is larger and can be used to create more interesting courses. The concrete is in excellent condition considering its age and has grip similar to the National Championship site in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Maybe a great autocross site is not enough for you to make the drive to Texas, perhaps you need more. The Friday night welcome party features some excellent Texas BBQ, a perfect start to Fourth of July weekend. And although there is no alcohol allowed on site, the party will move to any number of hotels and restaurants in town (If you know what a double IPA is, the SPOKES crowd may let you follow them around). That is the benefit of being in a college town during the summer, most of the hotels and restaurants should be wide open.

There is no camping on site (remember the site gets locked up at night). There are some RV parks nearby, and Lake Bryan has tent campsites. Hotels are about a 15min drive from the site and numerous.

Eleven states are within a 10-hour drive of College Station. And if your fuel tank and bladder are large, 25 states are within a 15-hour drive.

Still hesitant to make the drive? Remember Monday is the Fourth of July, and most folks will have the day off. There is no better way to celebrate this amazing country of ours on its birthday, than to travel across it while driving home after a 2-day autocross bonanza. But if you happen to hang around College Station until Monday night you’ll be treated to a fireworks display at the George Bush Library.

Maybe arrive and drive is more your style. Flights connect to College Station though Houston and Dallas-Ft. Worth. And the Texas SCCA regions (Alamo, Lone Star, Texas & Houston) are full of friendly folks open to negotiating a co-drive.

Won't it be hot? Yes, its July in Texas. Highs can get into the mid-90s. But it is nothing a big hat, some sunscreen, and endless ice cold bottles of water can’t solve. After all, this area of Texas was inhabited long before air conditioning, and those people lived well into their 50s. Besides, there will be tents on site to find some shade, and those of you in Street classes still have air conditioning. Those of us in more prepared classes will be glad to sweat out a few pounds to supplement the weight savings from removing the AC in our cars.

Go ahead and sign up for the College Station Champ Tour July 2-3. You'll get to experience an excellent site and excellent hospitality.
