Tune In: Devens Match Tour

For the 2nd year in a row, the New England Region SCCA will host a Match Tour at its home set of runways, Moore Field in Devens MA. The stitched together runways of Moore Field present a course designer with a multitude of obstacles, but often fantastic, flowing courses that never double back are the result. The surface is smooth, but small crests on the runways and a few tricky camber profiles in corners can send drivers into spin if they are not paying attention. Sound is a major concern at Devens as there are housing areas in the vicinity. All competitors should run whatever they can to reduce sound from their first to last runs.

While you can grill out on site, there is no alcohol allowed at any time on site. There is ample space to spread out in paddock, but the runways do transition off into loose gravel. There are plenty of dinning and bar options in the area of the site. Within a 10 minute drive you can get to a nice little restaurant with a bar, The Deven’s Grill. This is a popular spot for local drivers as the food is good and well-priced. For a quick and delicious sandwich hit up Verona Pizza, located right off of 2A as you approach the site. In downtown Ayer you can hang out and play pool in an old car dealership, The Billiard Café.

The competition at this event is going to come from some common and not so common places. There are a number of very popular classes that are woefully under subscribed at this event. SSR will have one driver, STX and STR are nowhere near the biggest class with only 6 and 5 drivers respectively, and STU being campaigned by a single driver. G-Street is the largest class, with 10 drivers and a host of fast local drivers.

Street is the most subscribed set of classes with B-Street just behind G with 7 drivers. We have a good mix of cars in this class, C4 Vette, S2000’s and Lancer Evolutions. Hank Wallace could be an outsider coming from BSP, but he’s fast and driving a good car alongside Fedja Jeleskovic. C-Street is all about Toyobaru’s and the RX8. Local driver Brian Doherty has been hard to beat, so keep an eye on him for honors in this class of 5 drivers. D-Street has James Feinberg, fresh off a string of class and overall wins making the journey up from NC. Will he be able to keep the streak alive at Deven’s? I’d have an eye on him to be one of the last 2 standing in the Super Challenge.

Street Mod and Super Street Mod are going to be fun to watch, with the Corrales 240sx Panda competing in both classes with a 5th driver in SM-Ladies. Everyone needs to watch out as Nate Whipple is coming out of retirement to take on SSM behind the wheel of Panda. I expect Jake Namer and PJ Corrales will have a battle on their hands to keep Nate from the top of the class. Street Mod Front will host a few Honda’s, including the very fast CRX of Don and Brian Kuehl.

Streep Prepared is a mixed bag, with big classes in ASP and ESP. ASP should watch out for the new comer to the class, Justin Lau in his Mitsubishi Evolution, but local’s Matt Mickle and Josh Noble will try and show that Subaru is the car to have in this class. ESP is probably the most diverse class at the event with an (2) Eagle Talon’s, a Nissan 300zx, one Camaro, and two different Mustangs. I’m not sure who to put my money on in this class, but Sam Krauss has been fast for a long time in that Talon! CSP and DSP have only 6 drivers between them. Bob and Billy Davis will be going at it with one another in CSP. If Bob can stay clean, expect it to be close.

Prepared and Mod classes are relatively well attended with B-Mod taking honors for the largest field. Last year Jim Garry was very close to a win over a different co-driver, so can he win over the field this year? A-Mod will be a great battle between long time co-drivers William Goodale and Stacey Strout, who often trade tenths at local events in their Dragon. Only 2 drivers in E-Prepared this year, but they are driving Daryl Beck’s diesel Jetta monster.

Street Touring Sport has a very healthy 7 drivers, but they will all be chasing local hot shoe Ben Wagstaff in his 1991 Miata. STC, with 4 drivers has a deep field with Chang Ho Kim, Roger Whipple and Derek Sivret often close at local events. STX will be a smash of cars, Acura, BMW, Mazda and Toyota. Danny Kao will want to repeat WIllmington, but Jeff Anderson might have something to say about that! Both Danny and Jeff have kindly been asked to not sing during Saturday evening’s party.

Don't forget to tune-in at 9:30am EST to uStream to listen to all the action in class competition and follow all our live results @ sololive.scca.com. Word is there might be fun runs to end Saturday!
