For 2013 the SCCA National Solo program started a new event called Match Tours. For that season the event was run primarily like an Evolution Super Shootout. During the season we were always analyzing the event operation and listening to members opinions on the event. From the information we gathered for the year we made some significant changes to the format. After our first Match Tour of 2014 in Wilmington we quickly noticed that some of those changes were for the better and others needed to be tweaked before another event was held.

Here are the changes that will be going through before the next Match Tour in Atlanta on May 17-18:

  • The name of the top shootout is going back to being called the Super Shootout
  • Instead of taking the top 32 into the Super Shootout we are simply going to take the top 8 in index per heat.
  • On Sunday those 8 per heat will battle each other in a tournament style bracket to determine the winner per heat (example- the top 8 in first heat will only battle others from the first heat). Doing this will lessen the advantage of a heat that may not have had favorable conditions which may have created a lower dial-in.
  • Once we have the heat winners for the Super Shootout they will each take one more run to determine the overall Super Shootout winner. By the time we get to the heat winners everyone will have run in the same conditions and the proper dial-in’s will have been put in place for a true winners battle (remember that dial-ins are based off of class winner’s best raw. If you go faster than that during the Shootout the dial in is reset to the new fastest time).
  • The prize money for the Super Shootout will be a little bit different. Each heat winner will receive $50. The overall winner will also receive $200.
  • The knockout rounds will have fewer rounds in them. At Wilmington we had 4 rounds which were found to be too many. We are now going to just 3 rounds. Everyone that didn’t qualify for the Super Shootout will get 2 timed runs. The following rounds will have just one run to determine who moves on. Below is how many competitors will move on for each round:

    4 Heat Event:
    • 1st Round - All in heat take two runs. The top 16 on index go to next Round
    • 2nd Round - Top 16 make one run. The top 10 of those move on to the next Round
    • 3rd Round - Top 10 make one run. The top 4 qualify for the Club Shootout
    3 Heat Event:
    • 1st Round - All in heat take two runs. The Top 16 on index go to next Round
    • 2nd Round - Top 16 make one run. The top 10 of those move onto the next Round
    • 3rd Round - Tope 10 make one run. The top 5 qualify for the Club Shootout. (the 16th competitor to qualify will be the 6th quickest in the 3rd round closest to 5th place).

The rules can be found on this link: http://www.scca.com/solo/content.cfm?cid=44517. As the year goes forward with more Match Tours we will continue to look at the event and listen to member feedback to improve the event and the experience that members will get at events. We look forward to seeing you at a Match Tour!
