SAN DIEGO, Calif. (April 8, 2014) – The parking lot of Qualcomm Stadium, the home of the National Football League’s San Diego Chargers, played host to The Tire Rack SCCA Solo Championship Tour this past weekend. The meet, which uses the traditional class-style competition, is the third of eight leading to the SCCA Solo National Championships in September.
The Southern California weather did not disappoint any of the 221 entrants who came out to enjoy the event. Unlike the other National Solo events held thus far in 2014, the weather did not hamper the event in any way. The sun shone while temperatures were in the 70s on both Saturday and Sunday. The 18 competitors in Street Touring Xtreme put on a show for everyone in attendance at San Diego. Max Hayter (STX, Whiteline/Vorshlag/Moto-East Subaru BRZ), of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., emerged as the winner, but it was not easy by any means. After three runs on Saturday, Hayter was the overnight leader by roughly 0.1-second over Mack Tsang.
On Sunday, Hayter started behind the eight-ball following two runs that were slower than Tsang. However, Hayter was able to turn on the heroics during his final lap of the course. He was the only competitor in STX to break into the 52-second barrier, while Tsang received a penalty for hitting a cone during his last run. Without the penalty, Tsang’s best time would not have been enough to overcome the overnight deficit but it sealed the deal for Hayter. Mark Hasbun, of Nipomo, Calif., won by a razor-thin margin, of 0.054-second, in H Street over Barry Twycross. Hasbun (H Street, Mazda3) took at 0.137-second lead into the second day of competition, but Twycross added to the intrigue by bettering his rival’s opening Sunday lap. In the subsequent two runs, neither competitor could better their times leaving Hasbun at the top of the standings.
In E Street Prepared, Elliot Speidell, of Surprise, Ariz., was able to guide his Ford Mustang to a narrow victory over Britt Dollmeyer. Speidell set the fast time for the class on his third run on Saturday. The time Speidell banked was enough to hold off Dollmeyer who owned the fastest time of the fast time of the class on Sunday.
James Yom (B Street, Tire Rack/Stock Shocks! Honda S2000) took the class win by surpassing Michael Heinitz during Sunday’s three runs. Yom finished Saturday with a 0.1-second deficit to Heinitz. On his second run from Sunday, Yom put down the run that would clinch him the win by 0.115-second. Cyan Kalman (Formula Junior B, 0 Kadet Kart), of Porter Ranch, Calif., also pulled out a narrow class victory. Cyan beat out her co-driver, and twin brother Dane, by 0.266-second after sitting second heading into Sunday’s trio of runs.
