By Brian Harmer The SCCA Solo Triad award is in its third year however, many members are unaware of the award or how to receive it.  To qualify for the prestigious Triad, drivers must win a Divisional Championship, a National Tour State’s Championship, and a National Championship. Winners of this award will receive
  • A trophy
  • A  fleece jacket
  • Free entry to the following year’s Nationals
  • A drawing entry for a free lifetime SCCA membership
Sounds easy to qualify for the Triad, right?  In reality, it’s challenging to accomplish.  The two previous years have had a total of only 11 people qualify.  Let’s take a minute to review a few details regarding the qualification process. Winning a Divisional Championship.  This can be a bit confusing because some divisions have a series of events that determines the champions while others have a single divisional championship event.  Check with your local division to find out if they have a series or a single event. If the division has a single event that determines the championship, there must be a minimum of three drivers in a class to qualify.  If there are less than three in the class, drivers are grouped together into a PAX class- an open class and a ladies class.  The winner of the open and ladies PAX become the winners of a divisional championship for their class. A little known fact about divisional championships: the championship that you win does not have to be within your region of record.  For example, if you live in Florida you are in the southeast division.   However, you can choose to race in the northwest divisional championship, win your class, and that counts as your necessary divisional championship race. To find the division nearest you, check out the SCCA website at http://www.scca.org/divisions.aspx. Winning a National Tour State’s Championship.  In 2011, there are four National Tour’s considered States Championships. These are:
  • Blytheville, AR- Southern States Championship- Already completed (June 11-12)
  • Toledo, OH- Northern States Championship- July 2-3
  • Packwood, WA- Western States Championship- July 16-17
  • Pikes Peak, CO- Mountain States Championship- July 30-31
Drivers must win in the same class as the divisional championships, and you are two-thirds of the way to qualifying for the Triad!  As with the divisional championships, there must be three in a class to be considered a state’s championship winner. National Tour State’s Championships use the same requirement as the divisional championship:  there must be a minimum of three drivers in a class to qualify.  If there are less than three in the class, drivers are grouped together into PAX classes- an open class and a ladies class.  The winner of the open and ladies PAX become the winners of a National Tour State’s Championship for the class they ran. Winning the National Championship.  The final qualification for the Triad Award is winning a Tire Rack® Solo National Championship.  Drivers must win in the same class as the Divisional and States Championship races.
