In Your Words: Paul Sexton

Wild and wonderful West Virginia is home to beautiful mountains, coal and an autocrosser driving a Prius. Yes, you read that correctly, a Prius. Am I for real? Yes, yes I am. Would I be faster and possibly have more fun in a Miata? Sure, but you and I both know once you've seen one Miata on course the other 15 kind of blend together. Now a Prius on the other hand, that gets people's attention!

I am competing this year in my third Prius. Yes, I've done this in three different Prii.  And now I’m wondering if the SCCA has ever used the word Prii on its website before.  Anyway, I've competed in Street Modified FWD with a 2008 Prius, in H Street with a 2011 Prius, and now driving a 2015 Prius. Only regional events thus far, but I'm actually taking things a bit more serious this year and going after the HS points title. I currently have two second-place finishes and one first-place finish in Class this year. No, I was not the only driver when I got first.  And yes, a sense of humor is required when you autocross a Prius. Back in the day of r-comps in ye old "stock" class, I wheeled the 2011 Prius to a third-place PAX.

But why a Prius? I'm a car guy that unfortunately has a long commute, and I work for a Toyota dealer. So my philosophy is “do what you can, where you are, with what you have.” And that's exactly what I'm doing. If you want to keep up with my non-stereotypical hybrid exploits, you can find me on Instagram @toyotechwv01.
