#TBT Lake Garnett

In a small Eastern Kansas town, about an hour from the SCCA National Office, is a small lake. It was built in the mid-1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. The lake was surrounded by a road allowing visitors to access the water, parks, shelters, etc.

SCCA held its first race there in 1959, with 25,000 spectators attending. The track was not for the faint of heart; narrow roads, little runoff, stone bridges, and some very tight corners made for a dangerous driving experience. The following video shows a modern MG RV8 navigating the historic course.

The Lake Garnett track was all but forgotten by all except locals until a revival was started in 2013. Organized by numerous local vintage organizations, the event features racing, autocross, and a car show in early October.

Hooniverse put out an article in 2014 discussing the downfall and revival of Lake Garnett here.
