TBT 10 Years Back at the June Sprints

The June Sprints is one of the signature events of the summer months in Wisconsin. Traditionally held on Father’s Day weekend, the event takes place this weekend for the 61st time. Since 2001, there has been more at stake for racers as the June Sprints represent the first jewel in the Chicago Region Triple Crown. The second jewel is winning the divisional points championship in the driver’s home division. The final jewel is winning the SCCA National Championship Runoffs.

In 2006, only three drivers earned Triple Crown honors: Niki Coello in Formula Continental, Hans Peter in C Sports Racer, and Mark Mercer in S2000. Niki Coello is pictured leading the field in FC before claiming the victory. SportsCar contributor, Tom Schultz, wrote that “Coello took the lead from the pole and simply disappeared, winning by almost half a minute over Dave Weitzenhof.”

Live timing will be available for this weekend’s June Sprints at SCCA.com/live.
