Tire Rack Solo National Championships Poised to Set Entry Records

TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 5, 2015) – With the Tire Rack SCCA Solo® National Championships Presented by Garmin VIRB still more than four weeks away, the 2015 event is within reach to set a new record as the largest motorsports competition in the world.

Following Tuesday’s early registration deadline, 1,240 drivers are currently registered for the Sept. 8-11 event in Lincoln, Nebraska, which would smash the current record of 1,157 entries from 2007 at Heartland Park Topeka.

The surge in participation correlates to the categories competing on street tires, namely in Street and Street Touring classes. SCCA Solo rules introduced supplemental classes for street tires in road car classes in 2012, then began a transition phase moving from Stock classes to the Street category. The purpose of this move was to create a more attractive rule set and make the move to street tires.

Street and Street Touring classes have blossomed under the new program. Drivers already entered in Street classes, which includes Super Street R, are 419 strong, up from 351 from 2014. The story is similar in the Street Touring® Category, which boasts 272 participants, an increase from the 242 last year.

All totaled, street tire classes account for 52 percent of the 2015 entries.

“The SCCA National Staff and the Solo Events Board (SEB) have worked for years to evolve the National Solo program through improved operations, first class facilities, enhanced communications, a relevant rules set and strong business partners - such as our title sponsor the Tire Rack and presenting sponsor Garmin VIRB - to make the SCCA’s autocross program accessible and worthwhile for our members,” Howard Duncan, Senior Director of Solo and Rally, said. “Reaching this new attendance threshold is validation that the program is meeting its goals. We appreciate the support of our members and business partners so we can continue to build on this success for an even better program and new attendance records in the future.”
