Passing the Baton for Area 12

As my time on the SCCA National Board representing the Regions and members of Area 12 comes to a close this month, I wanted to take a moment to share a couple of thoughts.

First, I am grateful for the support, guidance, advice, and feedback I have received over these last six years from my fellow members. Most have been supportive, some have been contested, but everyone who approached me had our club’s best interests at heart. I appreciate the passion and the willingness to discuss both sides of an issue or question that characterized all these discussions. You made my job easier, and in turn I was able to present the views and concerns of our area to the National Board on an informed basis.

Second, I would like to acknowledge the time and effort that Region and Division leaders have devoted over the years to building the programs and participations for our area. Area 12 has 13 Regions, almost 6,000 members, and a presence in every program that the club offers. That takes a tremendous number of volunteers who give their time and talents so that we can have fun with cars.

Speaking of which, if you haven’t had the opportunity to serve the club in some of these roles, we would love to have you join us. We’re not getting any younger, but more importantly we could use your time and your talents. The work is rewarding, and it is an opportunity to give back a bit for all that you have enjoyed.

Lastly, a word of thanks to Mike Cobb and the SCCA team. Always professional and ever helpful, they accomplish much with a relatively small team for an organization our size, and like us they are passionate about our Club and what we do.

It was recently announced that Sam Fouse from the NC Region won election to the Board to succeed me and represent us for the next three years. Many of you know Sam, but if not, he brings significant Regional, Divisional, and National Advisory Committee experience to the Board. I am confident that he will represent us and the club as a whole well- please join me in congratulating him and wishing him success going forward.

Finally, it was a pleasure and an honor to serve as your director these last six years. I hope that I was able to make a contribution, and I certainly learned much more about our Club that I have called home for the last 43 years than I ever expected. I also know far more folks in the Club that I ever did before, and I remain in awe of this sport and the place that the SCCA has in it. I am evaluating future opportunities to continue to serve the club, and will also remain an active competitor in many of our ongoing programs.

Thank you again, and I hope to see you at the track soon!
