It was three days of wild action at the Sept. 19-21, 2025, Tire Rack SCCA® Time Trials Nationals at Pittsburg International Race Complex’s (Pitt Race) 2.78-mile, 18-turn motorsport circuit, and (as expected), the cream of the crop rose to the top.
With roughly 170 drivers on hand, the competition was fierce from the drop of the first green flag on Friday. From there, things only ratcheted up, with driver after driver putting all they had into their year-ending effort to claim the top step in each of the 20 classes.
Yes, those winners were celebrated on Sunday during the KONI Podium Celebration, but it wasn’t just the top finishers who went home with recognition. A huge part of SCCA Time Attack competition is celebrating EVERY win, where often it’s the spirit of the competitor that’s more representative of their weekend rather than their actual finishing position. For that, there are the Time Trials Nationals Superlative Awards.
Yes, track records and top overall lap times are worthy of cheer, too.
In short, Time Trials Nationals ended with plenty of smiles on Sunday afternoon. Here’s whose smiles were among the largest.

Superlative Awards
Spirit of Time Trials
“The Spirit of Time Trials goes to someone who evokes the energy, the love, the compassion, the competitiveness while at the event,” explained John Hunter, SCCA’s National Time Trials manager during the KONI Podium Celebration. “At Time Trials Nationals, the recipient is someone who upheld that ethos all season long.” David and Laura Marcus did two SCCA Targas in 2025, multiple Time Attack weekends, “and they always show up in a way that is sincere and not serious – they do the competitive thing right,” said Hunter.
Fastest Lap Cup
While the cup is yet officially unnamed, this cup places the name of the event’s fastest overall driver upon it. This year’s fastest lap was posted by James Rauck, who set the track on fire with a blazing 1:43.516 in his 1999 Honda Civic.
SCCA Women on Track Driver of the Event
Presented by SCCA Women on Track, this award went to Melanie Kwong. Melanie is very involved in the SCCA Solo® community but wanted to compete at the Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals, so she chaired the Solo event that took place at the same time as Time Trials Nationals, meaning she missed the event she chaired. Time Trials Nationals marked her fourth time on track and her first Time Attack Challenge event ever.
Worker’s Choice Award
Decided by the workers, Cody Franssen was selected because his 2004 Chevrolet Corvette “had terrible numbers but [he was] an awesome driver.”
Fastest Classic
This award is presented by Grassroots Motorsports for Classic Magazine. The award goes to the fastest “older” vehicle at the event. At Time Trials Nationals, the “classic” was a 1989 Mazda RX-7 convertible driven by Justin Vandergriff, who laid down a fastest time of 1:54.586.
True Grassroots Award
Also presented by Grassroots Motorsports, this award goes to the driver who represents a true grassroots approach to motorsports. Dan Dennehy, driving his awe-inspiring 2010 Honda Fit, fit the description perfectly. Beyond making the most of every opportunity, always being the first to grid, and bringing with him an incredibly positive attitude, Dan also helped keep the party going on Friday night near his paddock spot.
Top Novice
This award is presented to a novice who, for example, had the fastest lap times, their enthusiasm was through the roof, they worked well with their group, or they had an amazing awareness level. “In this particular instance, it was all of that,” said Hunter, as he handed the award to Jason Lee.
Hagerty Keeping it Cool Award
Lori Weber was selected for this award for always being cool and collected at the event.
One More Thing…
The 2025 Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals would not have been possible without Vitour (the Preferred Tire of the Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials National Series and welcome party host for every stop on the Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge series), KONI (presenting the podium celebration), SCCA’s other official partners (Tire Rack, Hagerty, Sunoco Race Fuels, and Hawk), Grassroots Motorsports (which kicked off the 2025 Time Trials Nationals weekend with its Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge), and SUPERFLY (bringing an amazing car show and party on Saturday night).
But (and we buried the lead here), another announcement was made during Time Trials Nationals: 2025 marks the last Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals ever. Don’t be sad, though, because an even bigger event will be held in 2026 during a similar time of year at the same Pitt Race facility, although there will be one massive change versus year’s past.
Details about that will be available very soon at timetrials.scca.com.
