Heads & Tales: Andy Brumbaugh

(Editor’s Note: Here’s another installment in the series looking at the stories behind helmet designs of SCCA members.  Want to share your story?  Jot down a few words about your helmet, share a bit about what went into creating the design, tell us about the artist, take a couple pictures of the helmet and send it along via email to media@scca.com)

Family tradition often plays a role in artwork appearing on the helmets of race drivers.  Be it Papa Smurf on the helmet of Jenson Button or the family “teardrop” found on the side of Nelson Piquet Jr’s lid, heritage frequently finds its way into designs.

Andy Brumbaugh, an SCCA Formula F competitor, is no different.  His helmet has been an evolution over time while always keeping some family traits.

“My father, Kevin, has raced in the SCCA since the mid to late ‘80s,” Brumbaugh writes.  “His helmets have always featured three stripes on them.  I have incorporated those three stripes into my helmets as well to keep with family tradition.

“The colors of the stripes change from time to time, but it is important to me to always have them on the helmet,” Brumbaugh continued.  “My current helmet features those stripes on the top.  Another feature for my helmet is that it has to have vermillion, an orange-ish color, on the sides.  This was incorporated into my helmets in the early 2000s and has remained ever since.

“The color really stands out and makes my helmet instantly recognizable to my crew or any friends and family we have watching the race,” Brumbaugh said.  “On this most recent helmet, I included some designs for Indy.  It was always my dream to race at Indy and in 2017 that dream will be a reality at the Runoffs.  I wanted to include the famous pagoda and speedway logo on the back of this helmet as a tribute to the famous track and finally being able to race there.”

Andy, Tyler Cenarrusa, of Censport Graphics, really did an outstanding job on this helmet.  We look forward to seeing you wearing it with pride as you compete in the SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Indianapolis Motor Speedway next year.
