Dominance at Tire Rack College Station Champ Tour

Dominant Performances Part of Tire Rack College Station Championship Tour

TOPEKA, Kan. (July 5, 2016) – The layout for this weekend’s Tire Rack College Station Championship Tour in Bryan, Texas was conceived by Vivek Goel.  His very fluid, yet very challenging course gave rise to some close competition, as well as some blowouts.  SCCA member Todd Farris, the event chairman, coordinated with Texas A&M for use of its Riverside Annex Campus, which includes a huge amount of concrete that once served as an airport and is now used by police for driver training. The course was run over an area where a runway and taxiway cross, giving the ability for the course to have four “legs” that allowed up to four cars on course at a time.

Under hot and humid conditions, just a few ticks below 100 degrees, Goel himself managed a 3.9-second margin of victory in B Street driving a Honda S2000. Michael Grosenheider tried to mimic Goel’s performance in a Mazda Miata with a 2.6-second victory margin in E Street, which was near to Vitek Boruvka’s 2.5-second win driving a Mazda MX-5 Miata in X Prepared.  However, two of the biggest victories from the weekend came from Ken Orgeron in F Street and Todd Roberts in D Prepared.  Orgeron’s BMW M3 held a 4.7-second winning mark by Sunday evening, and Roberts’ Mazda Miata earned a 5.5-second domination.

Some of the closer fights included C Street where Daniel McCelvey won in a Mazda MX-5 Miata by 1.3-seconds over Jeffrey Bandes in an identical car. In D Street, Dennis Sparks was able to better his co-driver, Jordan Towns, by 1.5 seconds for a win.  Then it was Todd Milstead, in a Mini Cooper, who won in H Street by .5-second over Jereme Mason in a Honda Civic SI; and Brian Burdette, in a Ford Focus ST, won G Street by .2-second over Brad McCann in a Hyundai Genesis.

The Street Touring classes had tight tussles, too, over the weekend.  In Street Touring Sport, David Whitener claimed a .4-second victory in a 10-car field.  In Street Touring Ultra, John Hale held on to a .3-second win in a Subaru Impreza WRX. And in the 18-car Street Touring R Class, the Honda S2000 tango from Mineral Wells continued with Kerry Coughlin holding on for a .183-second win over Ricky Crow.

Other winners from the weekend include: David Hedderick in A Street, Deana Kelly in C Street, Keith Marx in Super Street Prepared, Mark Madarash in C Prepared, Eric Hyman in Street Modified, Erik Strelnieks in E Modified, Mason Herrick in Formula Junior B, and Brian Matteucci in Classic American Muscle Classic.
