At A Glance: VIR Majors This Weekend

Storylines/Things to Watch for:

This is the End … – The Southeast Conference’s 2016 SCCA U.S. Majors Tour wraps up this weekend at VIRginia International Raceway. The 10-event season started back in January with Round 1 and Round 2 at Homestead Miami Speedway, followed by Round 3 and Round 4 at Sebring International Raceway. The Southeast Conference then moved west in February for Round 5 and Round 6 at NOLA Motorsports Park outside New Orleans before heading north for Round 7 and Round 8 at Road Atlanta in March. While several Southeast Conference point championships have already been clinched, the remainder of the 28-class titles will be decided on VIR’s undulating circuit.

… And a New Beginning – While the Southeast Conference’s season is coming to a close, the Northeast Conference SCCA U.S. Majors Tour will actually be starting its 12-event calendar with Round 1 and Round 2 at VIRginia International Raceway this weekend. In the coming months the Northeast Conference will also visit Summit Point Raceway, Pittsburgh International Race Complex, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Watkins Glen International and New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Big Groups – A quick glance at the entry list for this weekend’s VIRginia International Raceway joint event shows a huge turnout for several of the Classes. Spec Miata rings in at around 40 entries, and the Spec Racer Ford and Gen3 Group looks to be filling the track with a 60-car field. Keep an eye on those two races as they’re sure to bring the excitement.

Beautiful Weekend in a Beautiful Place – VIRginia International Raceway is a little slice of heaven on earth. And the weather this weekend is looking lovely with temperatures expected to be in the high 60s with no rain in the forecast. Perhaps this is why nearly 130 SCCA members have volunteered their time this weekend to work this SCCA U.S. Majors Tour event. No matter where the SCCA races in the United States, the dedicated member volunteers can be found organizing, registering, scoring, officiating and flagging during race weekends. No event is possible without the help of these dedicated volunteers.
