Solo Season Gets Green Flag Away Down South in Dixie

TOPEKA, Kan. (March 11, 2016) – For the tenth year in a row, the SCCA National Solo season kicks off March 18 through March 20 with the Tire Rack Dixie Championship Tour being held at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Adel, Georgia.

Howard Duncan, SCCA Senior Director of Solo and Rally, said the entry cap of 275 competitors has been reached, so people trying to register now will be placed on a waiting list. But that is the norm for this annual event that has become so very, very popular.

“The fact that this is the tenth year the SCCA National Solo season has started in the Dixie Region is a testament to the quality event they operate,” Duncan said. “Each year, SCCA members from the Southeast, and others from all around the country, make the event a sellout and roaring success. I’m sure the southern hospitality and great BBQ plays a role in the event’s popularity.”

This year marks the silver anniversary for the SCCA Solo National Tour. And in this, its 25th season, the competition is expected to be as close as ever. For the first time in several years, no major rule changes were made. So drivers have had plenty of time to get comfortable with their cars and tires.

There has been one addition made to the 82 classes drivers can compete in during this year’s eight Tire Rack Championship Tour events. The new STP class was created as a place for mildly prepared Pony cars to compete on street tires.

Tire Rack SCCA Solo Championship Tour events take place over three days on two separate courses. Friday consists of Test and Tune opportunities, as well as a social gathering. Then on Saturday, competitors each get three chances to drive one courses, and on the second day get three runs on another course. Like any other Solo competition, runs are timed to 1/1000th of a second and knocking a cone down means a two-second penalty is added to that time. The best times from each course are added together for the final class standings.

As always, the Tire Rack SCCA Solo Championship Tour will again wrap up September 5 through September 9 at the Tire Rack Solo Nationals Presented by Garmin VIRB taking place at Lincoln Airpark in Lincoln, Nebraska.
