TOPEKA, Kan. (February 28, 2011) The top level of the Sports Car Club of Americas Club Racing program will visit Texas World Speedway in College Station, March 4-6, for the debut of the six-round 2011 BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour. The event, hosted by the Lone Star Region, is part of the annual Texas Two Step double national held each racing season. SCCA Club Racing is the top level of amateur motorsports. Of the 300 Club Racing events held coast-to-coast, 70 of them are designated as National events, meaning they are qualifying events for the National Championship Runoffs® and comprise the SafeRacer SCCA National Racing Series. Of these 70 events, only six were designated as BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour races, bringing the National spotlight to town and making this event among a select group of cant-miss events across the country During the race weekend, 28 classes of cars will take to the track, with classes broken down into six different race groups, creating a host of races within a race. The classes range from open-wheel, purpose-built racecars to cars that look like a street-going sports car on the outside but are all racing underneath, to showroom stock classes that have essentially rolled off the dealership showroom floor with only safety modifications allowed. The racers on the weekend are a unique mix of talented drivers. Most are weekend warriors, mixing it up on the track on the weekends before heading home to their day-to-day jobs through the week. Some are youngsters with an eye on a professional driving career, honing their craft while looking to the future. The common theme to an SCCA competition is that these are seemingly ordinary people doing extraordinary things with racecars. How prolific can these drivers become? Start with the motorsports legends Bobby Rahal, Mark Donohue, Roger Penske, Michael Andretti, and actor/driver Paul Newman got their start in SCCA Club Racing. More recently, you could have seen current stars Boris Said, Graham Rahal, Sam Hornish or Scott Sharp at a Club race. Spectators are welcome for this event at Texas World Speedway, where admission is $5. Active Military is admitted free. The gates open for spectators at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission includes a free program and a paddock pass allowing spectators into the garage areas for up close visits with the cars and drivers. Texas World Speedway is located about five miles South of College Station on Route 6. In addition to the six BFGoodrich Super Tour races run on Sunday, beginning at 12:15 p.m., spectators are also encouraged to check out the Saturdays six races, beginning at 11 a.m., and pre-race practice and qualifying starting at 8 a.m. each day. While at the event, fans and enthusiasts can stop by the Media Center to get information about becoming a member of the SCCA. Membership in the SCCA allows one not only a chance to hold a competition license, but an opportunity to participate in all aspects of racing including specialties as Corner Marshal, timing and scoring, race official, organization and administration as well as participate in SCCAs Solo or Rally programs. Joining SCCA is the best way to participate, and not just spectate. Texas World Speedway was built in 1969 and is one of only seven superspeedways of two miles or greater in the United States. The track has hosted Can-Am, SCCA, USAC, NASCAR, IMSA, ARCA and a host of other events over its 42 years of existence.
