Drivers Dodge Rain Drops, Tornados in VIR BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour Tuneup

ALTON, Va. (April 16, 2011) €“ SCCA Club Racing drivers dodged severe weather Saturday in the first-half of the North Carolina Region SCCA Oak Tree Double National race weekend, the precursor to Sunday€™s BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour races at VIRginia International Raceway. Shortly after the finish of race group two, featuring Touring 2, Touring 3 and Spec Miata, the skies opened up for an hour of heavy rain and wind. The area was under a tornado warning, forcing participants, workers and spectators alike indoors to seek shelter. After a one-hour, 15-minute delay, competition resumed on a wet track for Spec Racer Ford€™s Race Group Three. Group Four, for small formula cars, started with a slightly damp track, which was dry by the end. Highlights on the day included last-lap passes for class wins by Lewis Cooper III, of Grosse Pointe, Mich., in Formula F over William Valet, of Holbrook, N.Y. Valet started at the back of the field, but worked his way to the lead before Cooper passed him for the win at the finish line in his Martini/Voss Water Van Diemen. In the same Group Four race, early leader Stevan Davis, of Danielsville, Ga., re-took the lead on the final lap with his Goodyear/Butler Engines/Valvoline Racer€™s Wedge SB-1 from Daniel Oseth, of Sterling, Va. Likewise, in the final race of the day, Jeff Dernehl, of Roswell, Ga., passed polesitter Chad Bacon, of Kingsport, Tenn., on the final lap after a race-long battle to take the GT-3 win in his Roswell Outback Auto/RRE/Hoosier Mazda RX-7. Final qualifying for Sunday€™s BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour races is set for Sunday morning. Live timing and race notes are available at www.scca.com/sccalive.
