Wrapping Up In CenDiv: The BFGoodrich SCCA Super Tour finishes its season this weekend in the Central Division at Blackhawk Farms Raceway. The race is the ninth BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour event on the schedule, as the series visited each of SCCA’s geographical divisions in 2012.
The BFGoodrich Tires CenDiv Super Tour consists of Saturday’s practice and qualifying, and Sunday’s races. Each race winner will be given a victory lap and commemorative checkered flag, and the top three in each class will be treated to victory circle ceremonies after each race. Going Fast: With just a few weeks left in the race season before the SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Road America, the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour is one of the final tune-ups on the schedule.
Amongst those on the entry list are a bevy of former National Champions, and drivers who annually run up front at the Club’s biggest event. Scott Rubenzer, from Brookfield, Wis., is a two-time National Champ and entered in Formula F this weekend.
Cliff Ebben, the 2009 GT-1 National Champion, is on the entry list this week after an early-season crash in the SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series race left him with a broken elbow. It will be a matter of time to see if the injuries slows the former champ.
Joel Weinberger is the defending Super Touring Under National Champion, and racing this weekend in his Audi A4. Defending H Production National Champion Greg Gauper is in the same race group, driving his Honda Civic.
Aaron Ellis is a former Formula 500 National Champ, and in action this weekend. In other open-wheel news, Juan Marchand is now driving a Formula 1000, but in 2009 was crowned the National Champ in Formula Mazda.
From The Everyday To The Incredible: The racers at this weekend’s BFGoodrich Tires CenDiv Super Tour are a unique mix of talented drivers. Most are “weekend warriors,” mixing it up on the track on the weekends before heading home to their day-to-day jobs through the week. Some are youngsters with an eye on a professional driving career, honing their craft while looking to the future. The common theme to an SCCA competition is that these are seemingly ordinary people doing extraordinary things with racecars.
How prolific can these drivers become? Start with the motorsports legends – Bobby Rahal, Mark Donohue, Roger Penske, Michael Andretti, and actor/driver Paul Newman got their start in SCCA Club Racing. More recently, you could have seen current stars Boris Said, Graham Rahal, J.R. Hildebrand, Sam Hornish or Scott Sharp at a Club race.
The Best In Amateur Racing: SCCA Club Racing is the top level of amateur motorsports. Of the 300 Club Racing events held coast-to-coast, 70 of them are designated as “National” events, meaning they are qualifying events for the National Championship Runoffs® and comprise the SafeRacer SCCA National Racing Series. Of these 70 events, only nine are designated as BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour races, bringing the National spotlight to town and making this weekend among a select group of can’t-miss events across the country.
Super Sweep Set Up: The BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour events are the qualifying races for the prestigious Super Sweep Trophy. Drivers can earn a Super Sweep trophy by winning a Super Tour Race, the nation-wide point standings, a Divisional Championship, and a National Championship at the Runoffs, all in the same class.
Fun For The Family: Friends, family and fans are invited to experience the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour this weekend. The $10 admission is free for children 12 and under, and includes a free program and a paddock pass allowing spectators into the garage areas for up close visits with the cars and drivers.
