Opening Qualifying Sessions Run At New Jersey

Millville, N.J. (June 6, 2014) – Two sessions for each of the eight race groups ran qualifying for Rounds Seven and Eight of the Eastern Conference Majors Tour at New Jersey Motorsports Park on Friday, with 20 minute sessions in both the morning and the evening on the Thunderbolt course.

Both sessions, along with a brief 10-minute session on Saturday morning, will set the grid for Saturday’s 30-minute sprint races. Those three sessions, plus the possibility of a fast lap in Saturday’s race, will set the grids for Sunday’s 22 lap races.

This weekend’s event is Rounds Nine and 10 of 14 on the Eastern Conference schedule, which means some drivers have already counted the eight event maximum on the schedule or replacing earlier tough finishes, while others are still adding to their point total.

At last season’s event at NJMP, George Winkler crashed his Touring 1 Mustang hard on the opening day of qualifying in turn one after sliding through some oil. In contention for the season-long title at the time, which he eventually won, Winkler and some help rushed back to his home just outside of Washington, D.C., to pick up an older Mustang in his race shop. Behind the eight ball, Winkler still pushed to a pair of sixth-place finishes. With the car back in action this season, expect Winkler to run much quicker this weekend.

This is the second consecutive season that the Eastern Conference Majors Tour has made a stop at New Jersey Motorsports Park’s Thunderbolt circuit. Like in 2013, the Majors event is a spectator event on the NJMP schedule. Tickets are $15 on Saturday, and $20 on Sunday, and available at the gate.

All weekend long, live timing and scoring, notes and the PA audio feed can be found at SCCA.com/SCCALive, with live timing also available on smart phones and tablets through the Race Monitor app.
