TOPEKA, Kan. (Sept. 12, 2014) – Following the conclusion of the SCCA U.S. Majors Tour season, 27 nation-wide point championships have been crowned in in the SafeRacer Club Racing program.
The SafeRacer Nation-wide standings are used to measure drivers from different parts of the country against one another. Each driver’s seven best finishes at a U.S. Majors Tour race, regardless of the conference in which the points were earned, are tallied and added together.
Just like the season-long points for each Majors Conference title, points are awarded for finishes down to 20th place. Wins are worth 25 points, with a second-place finish worth 21 points and 18 are awarded for third. Finishes from fourth, on down, are worth 17 points and decrease by one for each finishing position.
All but four classes had clear winners based on points earned. Formula F, GT-1, Prototype 2 and Super Touring Under required a tie-breaker to determine a champion.
Max Mallinen, of Liberty Lake, Washington, was awarded the Championship title in FF after finishing the season tied with Timothy Kautz, with 159 points. The nod went to Mallinen who recorded four wins in 2014, one more than Kautz.
In GT-1, the same situation occurred, this time between Champion Simon Gregg, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and David Fershtand. Both drivers ended the season with 171 points, but the decision went in the favor of Gregg as he doubled the number of second-place finishes collected by Fershtand.
Richard Colburn, of Northbrook, Illinois, took home the Prototype 2 Championship after ending the season deadlocked with David Ferguson at 175 points, the maximum possible. Colburn was awarded the championship on the strength of his 12 wins throughout the season.
The final tie, following the point tally, came between Rylan Hazelton, of Santa Cruz, California, and Anthony Simmers in STU. Both drivers earned the maximum 175 points, but Hazelton had the edge for the title after scoring wins in all eight races in which he ran during the season.
Each driver who won the Nation-wide points chase in their respective class will be presented with a unique trophy to mark the occasion, compliments of SafeRacer. In addition, each winner also receives a $500 gift certificate for SafeRacer products.
