Hollis Takes SCCA TireRack ProSolo Gumout Super Challenge

MINERAL WELLS, Texas (March 30, 2011) €“ The season-opener for the 2011 Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo Tour looked a lot like the way 2010 ended, with defending Gumout Super Challenge season winner Andy Hollis, from Austin, Texas, capturing the title at the Mineral Wells (Texas) ProSolo. The event was hosted by the Texas Region under sunny skies all weekend long. Hollis finished second in Street Touring® during class runs at the Mineral Wells airport, qualifying 15th of 32 cars that made the Gumout Super Challenge bracket. His 1989 GRM/AST/PowerCurve/Soulspeed/JC Auto Honda Civic Si knocked off Paul Brown (2000 Plastic PP Racing Chevrolet Corvette), who qualified into the bracket with a runner-up in Bump Class 1, and Street Touring Sport class runner-up Robert Seelig (1989 Don€™t Mess With ST/STS Honda CRX) in the opening two rounds. Those two wins set-up a rematch for Hollis with Chris Cargill, whose class runs in the 1991 Don€™t Mess With ST/STS Honda Civic Si gave him the Street Touring win by 0.154-seconds. This time, Hollis got the better of Cargill, and was off to the semi-finals to face third-qualified Christopher Dorsey and the 1987 034 EFI/Apikol/TRD Toyota Corolla GTS. Hollis moved past the Race Tire Index 1 winner to face Kevin Youngers, from Greeley, Colo., in the Bump Class 1 final. Youngers€™ 2007 Youngers Insights Ford Mustang Shelby GT had already knocked off James Wilson€™s D Stock 2011 Gilllman Subaru Southwest/LCMS.org Subaru WRX in the other semi-final. At the finish, Hollis had captured the Gumout Super Challenge, with Dorsey topping Wilson in the consolation match for third place. Kim Whitener, from Fort Worth, Texas, finished third in the Ladies Class 1 open competition driving the same 1988 Don€™t Mess With ST/STS Honda CRX that husband David used to top the Street Touring Sport class. That third place propelled her to a Ladies€™ Challenge win at the end of the day, her first in SCCA Tire Rack ProSolo competition. Just to make the final field of 32, competitors had to fight through class racing that was as close as ever. Rob Irish, from Austin, used his final runs on Sunday in his 2006 COBB Tuning Subaru STi to top the Super Touring Ultra class by just 0.095-second over his teammate, John Pomrenke, in the same car. Just 0.091-second back from second place was John Hale in a 2005 JC Automotive Specialist/FTW Racing Subaru WRX STi. Mark Wortham made it two for two in Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Tour and ProSolo competition in 2011, following last week€™s Houston National Tour Super Stock win in Solo with a ProSolo class win driving the 2004 Axyon Consulting/Texas Time Trials Chevrolet Corvette. The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Tour continues with the El Toro ProSolo, April 9 €“ 10 at the El Toro Air Field in Irvine, Calif.
