Top Solo Champs Compete in Gumout All-Star Shootout

LINCOLN, Neb. (September 12, 2012) – For the second year, the top drivers at the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships gathered for one final head-to-head shootout, driving the Gumout/Black Magic/BFGoodrich Tires Volkswagen Golf in the Gumout “Use Your Motorhead” All-Star Shootout.

One driver was selected from each heat based on indexed PAX scores to even out the wide variety of classes that compete at Solo Nationals. Each driver made two runs in the Gumout Project car—a Solo-prepared Volkswagen Golf – with those runs determining the winner. PAX is an indexing system that applies a correction factor to overall times based on the class in which an individual competes. The goal of PAX is to remove the class variable, focusing on driver performance.

The competition was held in two different segments, with National Champions from Tuesday and Wednesday running on Thursday morning, and the Champions from Thursday and Friday running Friday afternoon.

Brian Heitkotter, the Street Touring Xtreme National Champion who has turned his run in the Nissan GT Academy into a burgeoning road racing career, continued to show his driving ability with a win during Thursday’s competition. Jeff Cashmore, the D Modified Champ, and Mark Smith, who qualified based on his D Stock title, completed the first podium.

Friday’s runs paired some very high horsepower, rear-wheel drive Champions adjusting to the front wheel drive Volkswagen. Super Stock National Champion G.J. Dixon changed his style the quickest, moving from his Porsche to claim the top prize. D Street Prepared Champ Alex Shchipkov, who ran his competition in a BMW 330, finished second, and Michael Maier made the huge jump from his tire-squealing C Prepared Ford Mustang to finish third.

In the Gumout All Star Shootout, drivers were unable to make adjustments to the Volkswagen. Tire pressure were set and regulated by the SCCA Technical Staff. The top three finishers in each competition earned $500, $250 and $125, respectively.
