Kansas City Region driver Charlie Peter followed the script to perfection, using the strength of his No. 66 Hoosier BMW M2 CS Cup to claim back-to-back Touring 2 (T2) National Championships during Sunday’s 62nd SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® Presented by Sunoco at Road America. Peter led the final four and a half laps around the 4.048-mile circuit to capture his third career gold medal.
Peter started second, chasing Tire Rack Pole Award winner Kurt Rezzetano in the No. 37 Phoenix Performance/Hoosier/Hawk Ford Mustang as the duo broke away from the field. Rezzetano held the lead early, but as the brakes on the heavier Mustang began to glow and fade, Peter seized the opportunity to take over the front spot on lap 9 going in Turn 5.
Once in front, Peter rushed to his third gold medal and sixth podium in six Runoffs starts. The clean race and one-spot gain also grabbed Peter the Sunoco Hard Charger award for most positions gained during the race.
“This one I wanted,” Peter said. “It’s totally awesome. I’m so lucky to have such a great team and a great family. Kurt drove such a great race. He’s such an awesome competitor and I’m lucky I get to race with him. Congrats to him, and I want to thank him for being fair.”
Peter joined his father, Hans Peter — this year’s Formula Atlantic® winner — in celebrating a Runoffs victory. The younger Peter now sits just one career win behind his father, with one more race for Charlie yet to go during the Hagerty Race Days at the Runoffs.
Rezzetano got everything he could out of the Mustang, easing off in the final laps once the win was out of reach to secure the runner-up finish. He crossed the line 5.1 seconds behind Peter but held a comfortable nine-second gap over third-place finisher John Heinricy.
“The first six laps or so were really fun,” said Rezzetano. “I could see him coming — I know his car holds on well. I was just trying to keep the tires under it. We almost had it, just kind of burned the car down again.”
Heinricy added a 28th career Runoffs trophy to his collection — the first with the No. 135 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing he debuted three seasons ago.
“The race was fantastic,” Heinricy said. “The car was holding up really good for me, all the way through. The crew did a great job and what more could we ask for? It’s the first podium for this car.”
After a hard-fought battle between the two of them, Scotty B. White and David Sanders finished fourth and fifth in their Dodge Viper and Chevrolet Camaro, respectively, for five different models of cars rounding out the top five positions.
The 62nd SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® Presented by Sunoco is the pinnacle of American amateur motorsports and crowns Sports Car Club of America™ Champions as part of the Summit Racing Equipment SCCA Road Racing program. In 2025, two Hagerty Race Days at Wisconsin’s Road America decide 23 gold-medal winners.
