On Saturday August 1st, amateur sports car racers are gathering at Lime Rock Park – The Road Racing Center of the East – for a day of racing and “raising” money to support The Veteran Homestead.
The Veteran Homestead is a non-profit organization that supports our veterans with multiple programs, including rehabilitation, training, education, and hospice care. Veteran Homestead, Inc. is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Fitchburg, MA. Their mission is to provide medical, psychological, and spiritual care to Veterans who are diagnosed with a terminal illness, elderly, disabled, or otherwise in need. The organization was founded by CEO Leslie Lightfoot in 1993 in Leominster, MA. It has since expanded into various facilities in New England and Puerto Rico. Please visit www.veteranhomestead.org to learn more about this passionate and caring organization.
The Veteran Homestead is in the beginning stages of building a 20 condo community called the Northeast Veteran Training and Rehabilitation Center (NVTRC). The NVTRC is a unique, first-of-its-kind facility in the country to rehabilitate returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families. The NVTRC is focused on education, physical, occupational and emotional therapy emphasizing family counseling and life and recreational skills that are so often taken for granted. The NVTRC will restore the "whole person" to a life in which he or she can live and interact with friends and family without the psychological baggage that so often accompanies an amputee. The Center will be situated on ten to twelve acres of land donated by Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner Massachusetts.
The August 1st “Racing for Veterans” event is an all volunteer effort designed to educate attendees about this fantastic organization and to help them in their efforts. The weekend racing will be a sanctioned Sports Car Club of America (www.scca.org) national event with all amateur drivers But the racing is far from amateur. The “Racing for Veteran’s” event will feature a Team DI PRO-IT Race (www.proitseries.com), a new group of dedicated racers that provide extremely competitive racing.
We encourage everyone to enjoy a day visiting scenic Lime Rock Park while supporting the Veteran Homestead efforts at the same time. This is a family oriented event that will include raffles for racing memorabilia signed by professional racers, on the track rides in real race cars during lunch, and free access (for young and old) to the paddock to get close to the racing cars and drivers.
We invite you to come to Lime Rock Park on Saturday August 1st and check out some of the best amateur road racing available. – AND – learn about how you can make a difference to our veterans!
