’24 Crows Landing Solo National Tour Fast Notes

Two weeks in a row at Crows Landing in California is a great stretch for a West Coast autocrosser, and that’s exactly what happened for many competitors when the Tire Rack SCCA® ProSolo® at Crows Landing was followed by the April 26-28, 2024, Tire Rack SCCA Solo® National Tour, taking place once more on the grippy NASA Crows Landing Airport surface.

An impressive 226 drivers showed up to this Solo National Tour, with Edge Motorworks adding to San Francisco Region’s excellent made-to-order tacos at the Friday night welcome party before everyone got down to the business of competition on Saturday morning.

Course designer Arvind Govindaraj took advantage of the wonderful World War II era concrete that every autocross site hopes for and, combined with California blue skies, made for a fantastic weekend of crushing cones.

Class Comps

It must be a West Coast event, because Super Street was crawling with Porsches. This included 911 GT3s and Porsche Cayman GT4s all up and down the 19-car field, save for one lone Corvette driven by Vernon Jolley. At the end of the weekend, it was James Yom in his 997 version with the win by just 0.090sec over Jason Bucki’s 991 GT3, with just another 0.179sec back to Jay Balducci in a Cayman GT4.

With 10 Solo Spec Coupes on the entry list, four trophies were going to be earned. Kevin Dietz took the top spot by 0.495sec over François Langelier, with less than a second back to Sam Mayorga in third. The battle for the final trophy came down to 0.024sec, with John Subosits fending off Jordan Valgardson.

The ND Mazda MX-5s took care of business in Street Touring™ Roadster. Matt Jones was tops by 0.185sec over Danny Gross – which was appropriate as they were co-drivers. Arvind Govindaraj, Joe Goeke, and Erik Acks (in different cars) were all trophy earners.

Classic American Muscle drivers came out in droves to ensure American muscle was represented. Brian Coulson won CAM-Sport in his Chevrolet Corvette, Jason Lee was tops in CAM-Contemporary in Hal Dorton’s Mustang, and Mick Maier topped CAM-Traditional over momma Brianne Maier in the family’s 1965 Mustang.

Lucky Lincoln

Up next for the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Tour is a biggie: the Memorial Day extravaganza known as Spring Nationals, taking place at Lincoln Airpark in Nebraska’s capital city.

Why is this such a hot event? The May 25-27, 2024, Solo National Tour is accompanied by the May 23-25 Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Series on the same Lincoln concrete where the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships will take place on Sept. 3-6, 2024. If you’re not already registered for these two Spring Nationals events...that’s unfortunate, because both the Solo National Tour and ProSolo events are already sold out.

There are other Solo National Tours you can still attend – check them out!
