’23 VIR Hoosier Super Tour: At A Glance

The upcoming Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour event hosted by SCCA’s North Carolina Region on April 7-9, 2023, at VIRginia International Raceway (VIR) is no ordinary Hoosier Super Tour. The fact is, the upcoming Hoosier Super Tour at VIR has something extra within the 10-event nationwide series because this is the same 3.27-mile circuit in Alton, VA, that will be home to the SCCA National Championship Runoffs this fall.

Because of this, you won’t want to miss a moment of the action. And thanks to the new Hoosier Super Tour enhanced video and audio package, you can watch it all unfold online for free in real time. The familiar voices of motorsports commentators Gregg Ginsberg and Brian Bielanski will be calling the play-by-play action, and DriversEye Live will present the live video broadcast featuring up to 12 cameras – plus in-car video where possible.

Following the Hoosier Super Tour VIR broadcast is super simple. Coverage is streamed live via the SCCA Official YouTube channel and SCCA Inc. Facebook page. Post-race video interviews with some winners from Saturday, and Sunday victory podium celebration videos, can also be viewed at the SCCA Road Racing Facebook page. Live Timing and Scoring will also be available throughout the weekend at www.scca.com/live. On-demand viewing of the action from VIR will then be made available after the event.

Live Timing/Scoring and Broadcast

Another great way to experience this Hoosier Super Tour weekend would be in person at VIR. The event is open to spectators, with a $25 three-day pass available. Two-day passes are available for only $15, and single-day admission is just $10 for Saturday or Sunday. Children 12-years old and younger are admitted for free with a paying adult, and there is no cost for spectator parking. Additionally, all current military are admitted free to the event, and veterans receive a 50-percent discount on entry.

How Things Will Happen

Found along the border of North Carolina and southern Virginia, VIR opened in 1957 as one of the country’s first permanent racing circuits. The 18-turn road course has largely remained the same over the years, with the only change being strategic track widening in certain places for safer runoff room.

Hoosier Super Tour on-track action begins at 8 a.m. EDT on Friday, April 7, with 25-minute qualifying sessions for each of the nine run groups, followed by another 25-minute qualifying session for run groups one through five. On Saturday, April 8, run groups six through nine will have their second 25-minute qualifying sessions starting at 8 a.m., followed by 25-minute races for each group to close out the day.

Then there’s another full day of racing beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday, April 9, with 14-lap contests for each of the nine run groups.

Schedule

Who to Watch

The fifth stop in this year’s Hoosier Super Tour series, VIR boasts around 275 entries for the weekend. The largest field by far is Spec Miata with more than 50 drivers in run group five. Defending SCCA National Champion Nicholas Bruni will be on hand, as well as many other heavy hitters all in contention for a win.

Spec Racer Ford Gen3 will arrive at VIR with around 30 entrants. And while the current SCCA National Champion in the class is not slated to compete as of the posting of this article, there are many former Runoffs winners in the mix who will certainly make things interesting.

The first run group is fairly stout, and includes an appearance by B-Spec reigning SCCA National Champion Steve Introne. And while the E Production and F Production fields in that run group will not have defending SCCA National Champions on track, entries numbering 13 and 16, respectively, will keep things exciting.

Many of the Touring cars are contained within the third run group, with 15 of them listed in the Touring 3 class. Touring 4, meanwhile, has a dozen competitors, with Touring 2 bringing a half dozen. But when you’re talkin’ Touring, Super Touring Lite packs the most punch with 19 entries in the eighth run group, who will be joined by another eight Super Touring Under competitors.

If open-wheel, open-cockpit racing is your preference, be sure to keep an eye on the 15-car Formula Enterprises® 2 field. Contained within the ninth and final run group, these drivers always put on a show.
