Volunteer is VIRtually a Fixture at VIR SCCA Events

Chances are if you’ve participated in or attended more than one Sports Car Club of America® Road Race at VIRginia International Raceway since 2001, you’ve at least seen Sara Snider.  A member of the SCCA since 1985, the North Carolina Region volunteer has missed very few Region events held at VIR over the last 17 years, and she’s not absent this weekend for the Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour event taking place at the track located in beautiful Alton, Virginia.

Over the last 30 years, Snider has managed to obtain a steward license in everything but Flagging & Communications.  This weekend, at VIR, Snider is serving as an Operating Steward.

“The Chief Steward has minions,” Snider joked, “and the Operating Stewards are basically the Chief Steward’s minions.  The Chief Steward is the ‘head’ and makes all the decisions with input from Operating Stewards, but we watch the drivers on the track to make sure everything is safe and flowing smoothly. To get a race on of this magnitude, it takes a lot of people in a lot of places doing the right thing at the right time.”

Over the course of a year, Snider says she tries to work race events at as many of the 13 tracks frequented by the North Carolina Region.  But VIR remains one of her favorites simply because of the venue’s beauty.  But what also makes the whole experience exciting are the delightful and varied people she interacts with during a race season.

“I love the people, the family” Snider said of the SCCA.  “They get you through hard times, bad times, low times.  But you always have somebody there for you.  No matter where you go in this country, there’s always someone you know thanks to the SCCA. It’s a family and it’s wonderful.”

If you’re not at VIRginia International Raceway this weekend to witness the Hoosier Super Tour, well, that’s a shame.  But fear not, you can follow all the action online at www.scca.com/live where you’ll find live timing & scoring, lap notes, live video, and Super Tour Radio presented by Hoosier Racing Tire.
