Self Help: Better Judging Cornering Speed

Whether you’re racing closely in Club Racing or pushing yourself at a Track Night; dodging cones at a Solo or making ruts at a RallyCross, properly judging your cornering speed will make the difference between a DNF or victory. Jack Baruth over at Road & Track realized the same thing. He explains that being able to accurately judge the entry speed can be a natural talent for some, but is a skill that can be taught.

“You start by lapping at a safe and sane pace, with the help of an instructor, until you know the track by heart. Then you can start slowly increasing the speeds until you start to experience significant understeer or, God help you, oversteer. Then dial it back a bit.”

Eventually, you’ll show up to a new track and be better at guessing the perfect corner speed. That’s when you know you’re getting closer to mastering the skill.
