In February of 1996, SCCA announced a new program to encourage membership and participation from the 25 and under age demographic. It was called Speed Freakz, and served to promote the club to a new audience for seven years.

After mixed success, Speed Freakz was phased out in 2003 and replaced with First Gear, a membership program that remains today. Among other things, First Gear simplified the program while delivering improved results for members and regions.

A hallmark of both programs has been featured members in SportsCar Magazine. These members represent both the current talent in the sport and the future of the Club. Some of today’s most competitive drivers in SCCA were once featured in this column. Keep an eye out for the column in the next issue of SportsCar or view past issues here.
