Davis Takes Ayer SCCA Tire Rack Match Tour Win

AYER, Mass. (July 24, 2013) – Billy Davis, of New Haven, Conn., was the last driver standing after winning Sunday’s Evolution Super Shootout, concluding last weekend’s Tire Rack® SCCA Solo Match Tour event.

The Evolution Super Shootout presented by BFGoodrich Tires used class runs from Saturday to set the first 32 qualifiers in the bracket. Once the top 32 drivers were seeded, a 16-driver Last Chance Qualifier bracket was set based on indexed times from an additional four runs. Finally, the last 16 positions were filled with the top eight Ladies Class finishers, plus an additional eight drivers pulled from a random drawing – the one remaining opportunity to get into the field.

On Saturday, the threatening skies opened up, causing a torrential downpour only three miles away, but the course stayed dry for the 152 entrants. In contrast, Sunday’s weather was pleasant with temperatures in the mid to high 80s.

Davis (C Street Prepared, MiataRoadster.com Mazda Miata) stood out early, setting Saturday’s fastest indexed time of 61.134 seconds. With that run, Davis was seeded as the top qualifier heading into Sunday’s bracket competition.

Driving a car that suffered exhaust damage when some rivets came lose in the first round of bracket competition causing a loss of power, Davis defeated Mark Daddio (Super Sport, Chevrolet Corvette) in the semifinals of Bracket A. In the bracket finals, Davis matched up with Tom O’Gorman (Super Street Modified, G-Fab Racing/Street Tires FTW!/Full Throttle Nissan 240SX), who took out G.J. Dixon (Super Sport, Grand Prix New York Porsche GT3) in the semis. In the bracket final, Davis wound up on top, earning a spot in the final four.

In Bracket B, Todd Kean (D Stock, G-Fab Racing Mini Cooper) took the semifinal win over Randolph Petschauer (Super Stock, Porsche GT3). On the other side of the bracket, P.J. Corrales (Street Modified, G-Fab Racing/240SXMotoring Nissan 240SX) defeated Justin Lau (B Stock, G-Fab Racing Honda S200) in the semis, earning the chance to meet Kean in the bracket finals. Making the most of the opportunity, Corrales beat Kean, earning a spot in the final bracket.

Road Tire FWD class winner Brian Kuehl (Big Budget Racing Mazda3) beat Carl Wener (Street Modified, Perry Performance Misubishi Evo X) in the LCQ bracket semifinals. His eventual opponent, Russell Burckhard (G Stock, Ford ST), defeated Steve Seguis (B Street Prepared, JDV Motorsports/Evans Tuning Honda S200) en route to the bracket finals. Kuehl ended up with the victoryto advance.

In Bracket D, Stephanie Reeve (Ladies 2, G-Fab Racing Corvette Z06) topped Lana Tsurikova (Ladies 1, Lang Motorsport/Ace Performance BMW M3) in the semifinals. In the other semifinal matchup, David Gott (Street Touring Xtreme, G-Fab Racing/Tulley BMW of Manchester BMW 330CI edged out Paul Klein (D Stock, Infinity G35). Gott then went on to win the bracket final over Reeve, earning the fourth spot in the final bracket.

Each driver in the final-four bracket had the opportunity to make two initial runs. Corrales beat Gott, and then Davis took out Kuehl, setting up a final matchup between Corrales and Davis for all the marbles. In the end, Davis would emerge victorious. In the consolation runoff, Kuehl took the win, giving him third place in the competition.
